Sateen sheets are more silky than percale, with a heavier drape. This is one of the softest sets we tried, it’s sold by the piece, and comes in a wider range of colors and prints. Both sets are about as soft as the sheets from Cultiver, although the Pottery Barn and West Elm fabric feels thinner and a little flimsier, and the hem finishes on the top sheets aren’t quite as nice. (You will need to pay for shipping.). It’s often touted as a great sheeting fabric for summer, because it’s so breathable. Wirecutter editor Winnie Yang experienced this same issue, when her top sheet thinned and developed holes and tears after only two and a half years of use (this is the same editor who later bought a Cultiver top sheet). Cultiver is more expensive than the West Elm or Pottery Barn sets, but it’s in the middle of the price range of the sets we considered. It wrinkles easily and will never be totally smooth without ironing. This brand has a very good reputation among linen lovers, so if you want sheets with more texture these may be a good match for you. If you’re looking for a less expensive set, we recommend the Belgian Flax Linen Sheets from either West Elm or Pottery Barn. A pretty good rimless cookie sheet. They feel brushed rather than silky, so they’re a nice alternative to our picks for something a bit warmer and less slinky. If you prefer silky, smooth, drapey sheets that resist wrinkling, this sateen set feels softer and more luxurious than most pricier sheets we’ve tried. “There is a consumer perception that products made in China are inferior quality, but that is not the case,” Tricia Rose, owner of Rough Linen, told us. Some of our staffers have had the Bean sheets for three or four years with no signs of wear or damage. But we do think the fabric feels comfortable and better than comparable options from other brands, especially if you want a light set for summer. We washed these sets five times and slept on each for a minimum of two nights, paying close attention to how the sheets felt against our skin and the edge finishes on the sheets. For the price, we don’t think you can do better than the sateen Wrinkle Guard 400 Thread Count Sheet Set. We ordered fabric samples or pillowcases of the 21 sets we were interested in trying. “The other thing is how you wash them, the sort of detergent you use, and the amount of detergent you use.” We cover Rose’s laundering advice in the care and maintenance section. We’d say they’re maybe 5 to 10 percent softer, and we actually prefer the mitered corners on Cultiver’s top sheet to the simpler edges on the Bella Notte top sheet. Like Cultiver, Rough Linen does not offer a warranty, and it offers only a 30-day return window for unused, unwashed items. Here's how often you should wash them, and how to wash them correctly. L.L.Bean Ultrasoft Comfort Flannel Sheet Set The best flannel sheets. The lower thread count is why linen sheets feel rougher than cotton ones—the yarns are thicker and therefore more pronounced in the fabric, giving it more texture. We’ve long thought that L.L.Bean’s sheets are well-priced for the quality, and in fact we’ve noticed many more expensive percale sheets have come down in price over the years to compete with them, but we haven’t found a set that’s better. These feel identical, and we suspect they’re made of the same fabric. Reasonable thread count: We focused on percale sets with thread counts between 200 and 300 and sateen sets between 300 and 600, our expert-recommended rule of thumb. Bella Nota also sells swatches ($5 each, but shipping is free) so you can make sure you like the fabric; the company also offers a 30-day return window, and no longer charges a restocking fee. We have read durability complaints about these sheets, but the problem doesn’t seem pervasive. Most of our previous picks made it through to this final round of testing. CloudTen’s Luna Percale Sheet Set isn’t durable enough for us to recommend. With regular use, we’ve found that the L.L.Bean sheets didn’t snag or lose fibers. Best Percale Sheets: Boll & Branch Percale Solid Sheet Set; Best Sateen Sheets: Cuddledown Hotel Sateen Sheet Set; Best Affordable Linen Sheets: Brooklinen Linen Core Sheet Set; Best Affordable Sateen Sheets: Target Threshold Organic Cotton Sateen Sheet Set; Best Sheets for Hot Sleepers: Authenticity 50 Percale Sheets Our main critique for these sets is that you can’t purchase individual pieces, and we have seen complaints about the West Elm set wearing thin. I tested our 2017 Royal Velvet set for two years and have been using our 2018 JCP Home set for almost three. They feel crisp and cool on the skin—more like a starched shirt than a drapey top. Wirecutter supervising editor Winnie Yang, who has owned linen sheets from multiple brands and experienced durability issues with almost all of them, said her Cultiver top sheet is the only one she’s used that hasn’t developed holes. To find the best sets to test, we looked closely at models featured in Architectural Digest and two posts from Apartment Therapy. The comfort layer has four layers: a quilted cover made from polyester and cotton, a top layer of 4 PCF memory foam, a center layer of 4 PCF polyfoam, and a base layer of transitional polyfoam. Also, these are the only sheet pick on our list that isn’t Oeko-Tex certified, a certification that ensures certain harmful chemicals weren’t used, so if you’re concerned about eco-friendly cotton, look to our other picks. The sheets you like most of the year may feel too warm in the summer heat. It’s frustrating to fall in love with a soft sheet in the store only to have it turn uncomfortably rough after a wash or two. After a few years of use, the sheets show no signs of pilling, the seams are still intact, the fabric hasn’t thinned out, and the color of our white sheets has yellowed just slightly. Prior to landing on store shelves, most sheets are finished in order to make them softer and smoother, including scouring to remove dirt, bleaching prior to dyeing, and mercerization with sodium hydroxide (basically a type of starch). They’re more affordable than other sets sold by the piece, and they come in a wider selection of colors and prints. For insider perspective on what makes great linen, we spoke with Hank Patterson, owner of the luxury linen towel company Deck Towel. If you like wearing linen, you’ll probably enjoy sleeping on it—it’s like wrapping yourself in a lovely summer breeze. The Company Store Comfort Wash Solid Linen Sheets: The pillowcase we tested felt about on a par with the Garnet Hill and L.L.Bean samples, but with slightly nicer detailing on the pillowcases. We’ve tested three sets of high-end sateen sheets: Frette’s $1,100 Doppio Ajour, Sferra’s $1,000 Giotto, and Sferra’s $2,000 Giza 45 Sateen. Restoration Hardware’s Ultra-Fine Lightweight Cotton Sheet Set is another higher-end set we like for summer. Both the West Elm and Pottery Barn sets look nice on a bed and feel good against the skin (but not quite as good as the more expensive sets we tested). For our 2018 update, we researched 40 more sets, and used the above criteria to narrow our list to 21 for testing. Balin told us, “Though each fabric absorbs the dye in different intensities (linens and cottons lighter, silk velvets more deeply), dying all pieces together allows us to achieve a harmonious palette for your entire bedding ensemble.” A custom-dying option is rare (Matteo was one of the only other companies we saw offering it), and the results are quite pretty. We’ll continue tracking reader concerns. They shrink about half as much as their closest competition (Snowe and Casper) but a little bit more than Brooklinen and Riley sheets. Bed sheets accrue body oils, skin flakes, and an assortment of other gunk. Also, JC Penney has rebranded our long-standing sateen sheet set pick from the JCP Home label to Wrinkle Guard 400 Thread Count Sheet Set. I built upon research by Melissa Tan, Alex Arpaia, and Gopinath, including interviews and testing with professor Ajoy Sarkar, assistant professor Min Zhu, and associate professor Sean Cormier of the Textile Development and Marketing department at FIT, as well as with experts in Cornell’s Fiber Science & Apparel Design department and with Mark Bagby, corporate secretary and director of communication for cotton-marketing organization Calcot. We love their sateen but think the percale is a pass. If you want a softer set of linen sheets, and price is no object, we recommend those from Bella Notte. Compared to wrinklier percales we tested from Snowe, Threaded, and Huckberry, these sheets are also a cinch to maintain. We’ve tested Brooklinen’s Classic Core Sheet Set several times, and we recommend these crisp, cool sheets for summer. We’ve enjoyed sleeping on a lot of the sheets we’ve tested over the years, but for various reasons, they’re not quite as good as our picks. We washed and dried these five times to get rid of softeners or other treatments that might mask the true texture of the fabrics. With every set considered, I measured the sheets out of the packaging, rubbed the fabric against my cheek (a common test for determining fabric softness) and between my fingers, washed and dried every set once, and measured again to determine shrinkage. This makes them a little heavier, with a drape that settles around the body rather than sitting on top of it, trapping more air against your skin. My job is to find the best bedding out there, but my passion is sleep (and finding how to help you get the comfiest, most restful night of it). We wanted to see if more expensive sheets were more durable. Cultiver’s customer service rep told us the company can generally ship the swatches within three business days, although it can take up to three weeks, depending on your location. They’re soft, thin, and cool—like a lightweight button-down. Then my husband and I (he prefers sateen, I prefer percale) spent a night or two sleeping on each set, noting how well the sheets fit the bed (a 10-inch-deep king-size Leesa mattress), which ones were breathable, and which were softest on the skin. Most linen sheets are treated to soften their texture, but fabric finishes will wash away, sometimes leaving the sheets rougher. Rough Linen has a loyal following, but we have read feedback in several Reddit threads about the sheets developing tears or holes (in one instance it happened after only six months). The long-staple cotton settled into its real character, like a worn-in shirt, and then these sheets became something special—if still a little bit wrinkly. We go into more depth on types of cotton in our post on whether Egyptian-cotton sheets are worth springing for. But I threw them in the laundry a few more times and, after the third wash, these sheets transformed into a smoother, crisp fabric that felt magnificent against bare skin. These sheets also drape as well as the L.L.Beans without feeling as heavy, so they feel cooler and airier on the skin but don’t tangle up like thinner percales tend to. These are softer than the Cultiver set, wrinkle less, and are also sold by the piece. The colors are really pretty and offer a good balance of light and dark. We found these sheets to be a little grainier than Cultiver’s, but they’re beautifully constructed and you can buy individual pieces. We’ve also tested the now-discontinued Snowe Sateen Sheet Set, L.L.Bean 340-Thread-Count Sateen Sheets, Magnolia Organics Estate Collection Sheet Set, as well as discontinued sets from Wamsutta, Macy’s Hotel Collection, Fieldcrest, Charter Club, Martha Stewart, Garnet Hill, and Amazon Pinzon. These were the roughest of the seven sets we slept on, but that texture isn’t unpleasant (it’s about as prickly as a kitten’s tongue). Several Wirecutter staffers have bought these over the years, and we haven’t heard any major complaints about their quality. They also feature some of the richest colors we’ve seen. Some people strictly advise against using fabric softeners on linen, because a waxy buildup from the softener can inhibit the fabric’s breathability. The best silicone baking mats replace parchment paper when baking and roasting. They are warmer than percale sheets, though, so if you overheat, they may not be for you. They’re soft and breathable, yet more durable than others we’ve tested. They’re beautifully made, get softer with every wash, and come with a generous one-year return policy. Several Wirecutter staffers dress their beds this way, because cotton bottom sheets tend to be more durable. She sews many of her own clothes, which has made her obsessive about high-quality fabrics—whether in a dress or bedsheets. One sheet is 1 x 19.25 x 15.5 inches. We didn’t think the fabric was as nice as our top picks’. The paper cutter function, which comes with a lock, lets you cut eight, A3 sheets at once—something laminators with paper trimmers can't achieve. With both sets, the sheets felt almost as smooth and soft after a few years of use as they do out of the package. Similar to most luxury goods, there’s a point of diminishing returns with the Bella Notte set. Other brands use serged seams at the corners. Hawkins New York Stonewashed Linen Bedding: We were drawn to these sheets when we saw them on Food52, but the pillowcase we tried felt very rough and after five washes it wrinkled a lot. Best Bedding Wirecutter. Companies often use chemical finishes to soften their fabrics and prevent wrinkles, and JCPenney told us Wrinkle Guard is a trademarked, low-formaldehyde resin treatment. Cultiver’s sizing is a little limited (it doesn’t offer a full-size fitted sheet, and not every color is available in every size), but these sheets come in the widest range of colors and prints we’ve seen. They’re about as soft as the West Elm and Pottery Barn sets, slightly smoother than the similarly priced Rough Linen sheets, and much smoother than the pricier Matteo sheets—whose samples were among the scratchiest we tried. Because each brand sent us a different size, we tried the sheets for fit on double-, queen-, and king-size beds (all with foam mattresses ranging from seven to roughly 10 inches thick). She previously edited cookbooks and craft books for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, and she started reviewing kitchen gear back in 2013. They’re almost equal to our upgrade pick, the Cuddledown sheets, which are significantly more expensive, but these feel a bit thinner and have more static. Try your regular detergent first, and check to see if the stains have come out before you put the sheets in the dryer (you don’t want to set the stains in the dryer). And it’s about $25 less than Rough Linen’s sheets for a complete queen set. And unlike the L.L.Bean sheets, these are available in twin XL and California king sizes. Linen isn’t for everyone. We’ve tested three sets of Cuddledown sheets over the years, and they’ve all wrinkled the least of any sateen set we’ve tried. Wirecutter We think some people may find these sheets too rough. I slept on the remaining sets again to finalize our picks. If that’s more than you’re willing to pay, we’d recommend first buying a flat sheet and cases for about $240, and using a percale fitted sheet. A few JCPenney customers have mentioned the colors of the sheets as being a little off from the colors shown online. We’ve researched hundreds of sheets since 2013, and our criteria for the best sheets are simple: Made from high-quality cotton: Long-staple cotton fibers make the smoothest, softest, and strongest sheets—most of our picks are long-staple. If you can splurge, we recommend Bella Notte Linen Sheets. That’s why you’ll often see the term “Belgian linen” or “Belgian flax linen” (indicating that the flax was grown, but not necessarily processed into fabric, in Belgium) used to advertise sheet sets from mass-market brands, like West Elm and Pottery barn. They’re about as soft as the Cultiver sheets, but they feel thinner and we’ve read owner complaints about the West Elm set wearing thin. Out of all of the sheets we tested, only the much costlier Bella Notte sheets were noticeably softer. (You’ll also have to pay a $10 shipping charge.) They hardly had any creases after a night’s sleep and several rounds of laundry, compared to the Wrinkle Guard sheets, which showed traces of a few wrinkles after some wear. The fibers used to make linen come from the stem of the flax plant—the same crop that produces linseed oil (or flaxseed oil, in the case of nutritional supplements). They are softer out of the box, but Cultiver customer service rep Shannon Bean explained that softening treatments can also prematurely age the fabric. We think they’re an exceptional value. Lyocell (usually sold under the brand name Tencel) is less environmentally damaging than some textiles but more expensive than cotton. As much as we love these sheets, we think most people will be more than happy with the Cultiver set. Wirecutter is reader-supported. Then I washed and dried the remaining nine sets twice more, again checking construction and softness. Similar to other picks on our list, they come in both solid colors and prints. Plus, even when frozen, the ice sheets are still flexible enough to mold and move how you need them to. As a bedding writer, I’ve spent years washing, feeling, wear-testing, and sleeping on sheets for Wirecutter. They come in more options, both solids and prints, than any other set we recommend, and their low price means you might be more inclined to take a risk on a punchy color. The $1,000 sets could be worth the splurge if your sleep priorities are intricate detailing, fine construction, a lack of chemical finishes, and the experience of owning sheets from a heritage brand. If you’re looking for a cozier cotton sheet for chilly nights or if you’re just a cold sleeper, sateen is warmer than percale. Like good cotton sheets, linen sheets will soften over many washes (the joke goes that linen sheets are really soft—after 10 years of use). It’s best to wash (or at least change) your sheets once a week, and when you do, use cool or warm wash cycles and dry them on low. The fabric is a little thicker than most of the sheets we tried, which we think makes them more durable over time. These are softer and more durable-feeling than equally priced sets, but they aren’t sold by the piece, and we have read complaints about them developing holes or tears after a short time. “Cutting edge mills in China have invested in technologies ahead of Europe and America, and much of the world’s finest flax goes to China to be woven into sheeting, which must be woven on modern, double-width looms. Thinning doesn’t seem to be a pervasive problem, and we’ve seen similar complaints for linen sheets from West Elm, Restoration Hardware, and several other big brands. Percale sheets tend to be cool and crisp, and of the dozens of sets we’ve tried, L.L.Bean’s 280-Thread-Count Pima Cotton Percale Sheet Set are our favorite. Similar performance, higher price. They’re very soft, lightweight, and cool, but the fabric is so thin it’s almost transparent. If you hate wrinkled bedding, skip linen (unless you have a staff to iron your sheets). A Pottery Barn customer service rep told us that the company will take washed sheets back within the 30-day return window. We’ve been recommending them since 2014, and while they aren’t the smoothest percale—our upgrade pick from Riley feels a bit silkier—they’re crisp and softer than most percales we’ve slept on. People spend up to a third of their lives sleeping, so it’s important to choose great bedsheets that are comfortable and durable. Wirecutter is a list of of the best gear and gadgets for people who want to save the time and stress of figuring out what to buy. Sateen wrinkles less than percale, too, and these sheets resist wrinkles more than most sateens we’ve tried (but not quite as much as the Cuddledown set). We’ve tried 27 sateen sheets since we began testing sheets in 2014, and the Wrinkle Guard 400 TC Sheet Set has consistently been on top for its smooth, luxurious texture, as well as its warmth, durability, and value. Your ancestors might have slept on a single set of linen sheets for 50 years, but modern sets are more of a luxury purchase than a long-term investment. These sheets are the smoothest percale set we’ve ever tried—they feel like a perfectly crisp button-down. That’s why most of the brands we tested—including from Cultiver, Rough Linen, Bella Notte, West Elm, and Pottery Barn—all use fabric made in China. For our original review in 2016, we researched nearly a dozen sets and tested four of them. Cultiver’s sizing is more limited than other brands’. They wrinkle less than any set we’ve tried under $100 (and less than several from our competition section that cost more). We read complaints on Apartment Therapy and in one Reddit thread about the sheets quickly wearing thin. A West Elm rep told us that her company’s policy is the same, although she said it’s on a case-by-case basis. That heft also makes the L.L.Bean sheets feel more substantial when you slide into bed and less flimsy than most of the startup brands we’ve tried. © 2021 Wirecutter, Inc., A New York Times Company. They cost significantly more than the JCPenney sheets, especially if the Wrinkle Guard are on sale, so we think investing in these is worthwhile only if you’re particular about the smoothness of your sheets. We think the texture of these sheets will be too rough for many people, but we do think the fabric feels sturdy and may wear well over time. If your sheets are really wrinkled out of the dryer, Rose recommends dampening them slightly and letting them air dry. They’re one of the few sets we’ve tried that are virtually wrinkle-free, making them lower maintenance than percale sheets. The Cultiver sheets typically come in around 14 colors (plus three prints), which is the widest selection of any of our top contending sets. They’re significantly silkier and more drapey than the cool, crisp percale sheets we recommend from L.L.Bean and Riley. Machine-wash your linen sheets and dry them on a medium heat setting. Some of the percale sets we’ve tried have actually gotten scratchier and wrinklier after a few washes, but the L.L.Bean sheets maintain their durability over years of use and just get better the more you wash them. We’ve removed our alert for Riley’s percale sheet set and updated the link for our sateen pick, the Wrinkle Guard 400 Thread Count Sheet Set. If you sleep hot, try using a linen top sheet with a percale fitted sheet, like the pros do. With linen, some people prefer to use two flat sheets, one folded around the mattress with hospital corners. Bella Notte also sells its sheets, which come in eight subdued colors, by the piece. Rose has a few other detergent recommendations on her company’s site. However, we’ve also found linen sheets to be comfortable and insulating in the winter, so we recommend them for year-round use. They’re also almost indistinguishable from the more expensive Cuddledown set I’ve long-term tested for years—they feel just a bit thinner, but with no signs of holes or tears anywhere. We will keep an eye out for any reported changes with the new Wrinkle Guard label after our 2021 testing. Because the truth is there isn’t really a “best” anything out there — it’s just easier to … High quality at a fantastic price. Unlike the L.L.Bean sheets, the Riley sheet set comes in California king and twin XL sizes. The fabric was very soft, but we were concerned about its long-term durability. Strong owner reviews: We tried to find sheets with a long history of good reviews, but we also considered newer startup brands that may have few (or no) reviews yet. We’ve tested a new set and confirmed with the company—these are the same sheets, and in testing they were the same quality. We’ve tested five separate sets of these sheets under the Royal Velvet, JCPenney Home, and Wrinkle Guard brand names with four different writers. We focused on sets in the $250 range for our original 2016 review. Like Cultiver, Rough Linen sells its sheets by the piece, so you could slowly invest in a set, or just buy a top sheet and pillowcase to use with a durable fitted cotton sheet. We’re constantly keeping our eyes on new bedding companies and new sheets, and I’ve brought in and tested several promising sets between our big 2017 and 2019 updates. Libeco Santiago Sheets: The sample we tried felt cool, crisp, and sturdy, but more textured than the full sets we opted to test. They’re still very breathable but aren’t ideal for summer nights. Also, the L.L.Bean sheets do not come in California king size; it's one of only two picks on our list that doesn’t. Good owner reviews: We looked closely at owner reviews on retailer sites when they were available (for many retailers they weren’t), and we also dove into many Reddit threads (including here, here, and here), where we saw an active dialogue among people who have purchased and used various brands of linen sheets. We’ve seen complaints about linen sheets at all price levels (although we haven’t seen any complaints about Bella Notte sheets popping up in places like Reddit). Most cotton sheets are either percale or sateen. These are equal to the West Elm set. After testing and deciding on our top sets, we learned how they were made and how to care for them by speaking to a representative from each brand: Tricia Rose, owner of Rough Linen; Taylor Batlin, brand director at Bella Notte; and Shannon Bean, a customer service representative at Cultiver. These have been rebranded three times since we first tested them—they were originally Royal Velvet, then JCP Home, and they’re now simply the Wrinkle Guard brand; we confirmed with JC Penney that they are all the same sheets. Like Cultiver, Rough Linen doesn’t offer a warranty, but will send a free sample card (you do have to pay for shipping) so you can feel the fabric before buying, and the company usually offers a 30-day return policy (it’s currently extended to 60 days in response to the Covid-19 pandemic). We purchased and tested an additional set in late 2019/early 2020, and while we had no customer service issues the quality was still not up to our original 2017 test set—the sheets were noticeably thinner, and not as soft; we’re still not confident recommending this brand. If you buy a set of these on sale, we think they’re the best value on our list. We’ve tested 22 percale sheets since 2014 and none have been able to offer what the classic L.L.Bean 280-Thread-Count Pima Cotton Percale Sheet Set can: top-notch construction on crisp, cool cotton sheeting that just gets better with age. But they weren’t softer or more comfortable than our upgrade pick, the Cuddledown sheets. Historically, the best linen comes from Europe, specifically Belgium, Ireland, France, and Lithuania.
